Alpha Mae Eaker Payne, 86, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, at her home surrounded by family. Born on November 15, 1939, in Ball Knob, Arkansas, Alpha lived a life marked by devotion to her family and her craft.
Known fondly as "Nonnie" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alpha earned a respected place in the hearts of those who knew her. She spent many years working as a barber and hairstylist, a profession through which she touched countless lives with her skill and warm spirit. Her talents extended beyond the chair, as she became a matriarchal figure whose wisdom and kindness left lasting impressions.
Alpha was the devoted wife of William "Irvin" Payne, to whom she was married for 66 years. Together, they built a life grounded in love and mutual respect. She proudly raised her daughters Sandra McLain of Walls, Mississippi, and Teresa Bechel and her husband Dale of Hernando, Mississippi. Though deeply mourned, Alpha is also remembered as the mother of the late Kathy Payne Ward.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Terrea Murphy and her husband Matthew, Casey Hamilton and her husband Jay, Lisa Dix and her husband Jessie, Stephanie Miller and her husband Bryan, and Matt Bechel and his wife Sierra. The warmth of her spirit shines brightly in her great-grandchildren Madison, Addizen, Laney, Alaina, Caleb, and Aaron.
Alpha was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Goldie Eaker, and her sisters Marie Wooten and Jeanette Billings. Despite these losses, she met every challenge with grace and strength, exemplifying resilience and unconditional love.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home, located at 2470 Hwy 51 S, Hernando, Mississippi. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM. Her interment will take place at Goodrum Memorial Cemetery, 9960 MS-304, Hernando, Mississippi.
Alpha Mae Eaker Payne's departure leaves a profound void, yet the imprint she made upon her family and community endures. She is remembered with great respect and love, her memory a beacon of warmth and dedication to all whose lives she touched.
