Archie Leon Phipps Jr., 90, of Hernando, Mississippi, passed away at his home on October 24, 2026, surrounded by family. Born on April 7, 1936, in McComb, Mississippi, Archie built a life marked by devotion to his family, steady hard work, and deep faith. He graduated from McComb High School in the Class of 1954 and, after high school, joined the Illinois Central Railroad as a railroad telegrapher. Through 44 years of dedicated service, he steadily worked his way up to become Vice President of the Southern Division before his retirement. He was also a member of the National Guard.
Beyond his work, Archie found his greatest joy in the people he loved most. He enjoyed spending time with family and watching his Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide football on Saturdays, simple pleasures that became cherished traditions for those around him. One of the most meaningful moments of his life came at age 70, when he was baptized and came to know the Lord, a faith that became a treasured part of his journey.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Paula Thornhill Phipps, with whom he shared a long and loving marriage. He also leaves behind his daughter, Kristi Cherry, and her husband, Britt; his sister, Sylvia Clark; his son-in-law, Stuart Steib; and his grandchildren, Sarah Marie Pinera (Rigo), Leigh Ann Purcello (Juliana), Kaitlyn Steib, Bryce Cherry, and Blake Cherry. He is also lovingly remembered by his great-grandchildren, Caeleb, Isabella, Lucia, Carter, and Salome, and by his niece, Amanda Picou, and her daughter, Cahil Picou.
Archie was preceded in death by his father, Archie L. Phipps Sr.; his mother, Marie Whittington Phipps; and his daughter, Misti Phipps Steib.
His life was one of commitment, perseverance, and love—given faithfully to his work, his family, and his faith. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with close family.
