Barbara Nell Chambers

November 17, 1953 — May 3, 2026

Sarah, MS

Barbara “Nell” Chambers, 72, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on November 17, 1953 in Sardis, MS, Barbara’s life was marked by a commitment to service, family, and the simple joys that enriched her years.

Nell dedicated her career to nursing, specifically in hospice care, touching countless lives through her compassionate work at Baptist Hospice and Gentiva Hospice. Her care and kindness provided comfort during the most difficult times for many families, reflecting the deep empathy that defined her both professionally and personally.

A lifelong resident of Mississippi, Nell was graduated from Coldwater High School in Coldwater, MS, before earning her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Northwest Mississippi Community College. Her academic achievements laid the foundation for a meaningful career centered around healing and hope.

Family was the cornerstone of Nell’s life. She shared 55 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Thomas Chambers, who survives her. Together, they raised three daughters: Tammy McAlaster and her husband Justin of Hernando, MS; Tina Vokral of Sarah, MS; and Micheala Sexton of Arkansas. Nell’s legacy extends to her beloved grandchildren; Christina, Megan, Ethan, Logan, Kaitlyn, and Addison—and her great-granddaughter Lily, all of whom held a special place in her heart and referred to her as “NaNae”. She was remembered fondly for the joy and love she lavished on her family.

Nell also found joy in the small wonders of life. She loved hummingbirds, often enchanted by their delicate beauty, and took pleasure in a glass of ice tea as she passed the hours. A lover of reading, Nell’s thoughtful nature was reflected in the quiet moments she enjoyed with a good book. Her affection extended to all dogs, especially her own four-legged companions: Spanky, Prissy, Paisley, Maggie, and Max, who were cherished members of her household.

She is survived by her sister Judy Willard, and brothers Jimmy Lanier and his wife Melba, and Mike Lanier, who remain grateful for the memories they shared. Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Mancil and Gladys Lanier, and her sister-in-law, Jenni.
