Carol Jane Morris Ries

Carol “Janie” Morris Ries, 78, of Hernando, Mississippi, passed away at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee on October 25, 2025 surrounded by family.

She was born on December 27, 1946 in Greenville, Mississippi, and earned her bachelor’s degree at Mississippi State University and her master’s degree at Delta State University. She was a high school mathematics teacher for over 25 years at Riverside High School in Avon, Mississippi, as well as Hernando High School in Hernando, Mississippi. While at Riverside High School she was a statistician for the baseball and basketball teams, worked concessions at football games, founded the golf team and was the cheerleading sponsor both at Riverside as well as Hernando. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Hernando, devoted member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators and member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Janie taught many years at The Mississippi Governor’s School summer program in Columbus, Mississippi, provided backstage logistics support for Teresa McGee School of Dance recital and spent over 17 years working at the casinos. She loved the beach and her family and thrived on chaos of family gatherings and vacations.

Visitation will be from 10 am until a Funeral Mass beginning at 11 am on Monday, November 3, 2025 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Hernando, Mississippi - 545 East Commerce St.

She is survived by her (2) daughters; Kathy Shows and her husband, Scott of Atlanta, Georgia and Marie Scudder and her husband, Gary of Hernando, Mississippi, (1) son, Joey Ries and his wife, Heather of Hernando, Mississippi, (1) sister, Peggy Waldrup of Oakland, Mississippi, (2) brothers; Lee Morris and his wife Debbie of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Eddie Morris and his wife, Elke of Cabot, Arkansas and (9) grandchildren; Connor Shows, Lauren Shows, Emerson Shows, Carson Shows, Cambelle Ries, Holden Ries, Mando Ries, Caleb Ries and Louie Scudder.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Ries and her parents Charles and Carol Morris.
