Donald Gene Childress, 79, fondly known as Don, was born on November 5, 1946, in Hernando, Mississippi. He passed away on February 26, 2026, at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven, Mississippi, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication that will be deeply missed.
Throughout his life, Don worked diligently as a diesel mechanic at Detroit Diesel, showcasing his skills and passion for his craft. Beyond his professional endeavors he found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly hunting and fishing, pursuits that brought him great happiness and connected him to nature.
Don's life was rich with family and love. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Childress, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they nurtured a close-knit family that includes their three daughters, Jean Childress, Rhonda Childress, and Ashley McKinney, all of Hernando, Mississippi. Don's legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Daniel, Derek, Erica, and Kristina, along with ten great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Ruth Childress, who provided the foundation of love and care that shaped the man he became.
A visitation in honor of Don will take place on Sunday March 1, 2026, at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home in Hernando, Mississippi, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at Hernando Memorial Park Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
Don's spirit and memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived, filled with love, family, and cherished memories.
