Edward Darnell Dunlap, affectionately known to many as Darnell, passed away on August 20, 2026, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 75. Born on February 9, 1951, in Hernando, Mississippi, Edward’s journey through life was marked by the warmth of his relationships, a steadfast work ethic, and a deep passion for sports and storytelling.
A proud graduate of Independence High School, class of 1969, Edward cherished the friendships and memories forged during his formative years. His commitment to hard work and community service led him to a fulfilling career with the U.S. Postal Service, from which he eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and reliability.
Edward was renowned among family and friends as an avid sports fan, most notably for his unwavering devotion to the Ole Miss Rebels. Saturdays spent watching games became cherished rituals, filled with excitement and camaraderie. He especially treasured cheering for Ole Miss alongside his beloved niece Britney Evans—his “best bud”—with whom he shared not just a passion for sports but also an unbreakable bond. Darnell played an extraordinary role in Britney’s life, treating her as his own and creating a partnership built on mutual support, affection, and countless shared adventures.
To all who knew him, Darnell was a spirited storyteller. He delighted in reminiscing about the “good ole days,” drawing laughter and nostalgia from the people gathered around him. His stories, always heartfelt and vivid, served as windows into times gone by, connecting generations across the family.
Above all, Edward’s greatest joy was found in his family. He was a loving brother to Judy Joe, Jackie Burdick and her husband Andy, Cindy Gore and her husband Todd, and James Dunlap; and a cherished uncle, deeply devoted to all his (19) nieces and nephews, (40) great nieces and nephews and (60) great-great nieces and nephews. The love he extended to them was unwavering and evident in the countless ways he supported, encouraged, and celebrated each of their journeys. Lifelong friends, like Steve Shelton, also experienced his loyalty and warmth.
Darnell’s memory is also honored by the legacy of those who preceded him in death: his brother Robert Dunlap; his sisters Inez Culver, Bobbie Jean Scruggs, Cora Baldwin, Joyce Otting, and Kaye Dunlap; as well as (6) nieces and nephews. Each of them played a significant role in shaping the man he became and remain integral parts of his enduring story.
Edward Darnell Dunlap will be remembered for his big-heartedness, infectious enthusiasm, and the treasured stories and traditions he leaves behind. His life touched many and his spirit remains a guiding light for all who loved him.
