Ernest B. Johnston, 90, a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, at his home in Greenleaf, Mississippi. Born on July 3, 1935, in Hernando, Mississippi, Ernest lived a full and meaningful life marked by dedication to his work, his family, and his community.
A proud graduate of Hernando High School, Ernest went on to build a career with Truckline Gas Company in Independence, Mississippi where he served as a Pipeline Maintenance Mechanic until his retirement. His commitment to his profession was evident to all who knew him, and his expertise and work ethic left a lasting impression on his colleagues.
Known affectionately as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ernest’s greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his daughters, Gail Roberson and her husband Joey of Hernando, Mississippi, and Jane Warren of Coldwater, Mississippi; his son, Wayne Johnston, and his wife Paulette of Coldwater, Mississippi; and his beloved sisters, Kitty Dell Moore and ElLouise Van Zant. His legacy continues through his many grandchildren—Denise, Danielle and her husband Travis, Jarrod and his wife Summer, Justin and his wife Katie, Kacey and her husband John, and Shelby and her husband Cody—and an extensive family of great-grandchildren: Brennan, Kayden, Vanessa, Alyssa, A.J., Ben, Brady, Bryce, Brynleigh, Wes, Stevie, Casen, Maggie, and Lottie. Their lives were deeply enriched by Ernest’s love and guidance.
Ernest was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Peggy Bailey Johnston; his parents, Kimble and Bettye Johnston; his brothers, Steve and James Johnston; and his sisters, Betty Jean Oliver and Jewel Harris. Though they are no longer with us, their memory remains a vital part of the family's heritage.
Beyond his professional life and family, Ernest had a passion for farming, finding true happiness riding his tractor and gator, tending to his garden, and visiting the Trade Days Market in Coldwater, Mississippi. These hobbies brought him peace and connection to the land he loved, reflecting a lifetime’s bond with nature and hard work.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home located at 2470 Hwy 51 S, Hernando, Mississippi 38632.
