Helen Louise Johnson Wright, born February 16, 1941, in Blytheville, Arkansas, passed away on Easter morning, April 5, 2026, at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, Tennessee. She was a woman of remarkable resilience and dedication, whose life was marked by a steadfast work ethic and a deep commitment to her family, community, and faith.
Helen’s early years unfolded in the close-knit community of Dyess, Arkansas, where she graduated from Dyess High School. There, she not only cherished her classmates but also developed a profound love for her hometown, fondly remembering events such as the Johnny Cash Days that brought joy and unity to her community. Her passion for basketball was both a personal pursuit and a source of connection; it was through this shared love of the game that she met her beloved husband, Bill Wright, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage.
A gifted quilt maker and seamstress, Helen worked as a self-employed artisan, creating beautiful handmade quilts that reflected her meticulous nature and artistic spirit. Beyond her craft, she was a devoted homemaker who infused her home with warmth and care, often expressing her affection through the meals she lovingly prepared. Known for her culinary skills, many family gatherings and special occasions were enriched by her cooking, which became a heartfelt tradition shared among loved ones.
Helen’s interests were wide-ranging. She was an avid baseball enthusiast, delighting especially in watching her children and grandchildren play. Fishing was another cherished pastime, not just for the moments of tranquility and connection with nature, but also for the simple fact that she could always catch more fish than anyone else. Her commitment to youth extended beyond her hobbies; she served as a youth softball coach and was a former basketball player herself. She was recognized as a spiritual leader in her community, guiding many as a youth leader and Sunday School teacher. Helen was a founding member of the WOW group at Solid Rock Assembly of God Church in Senatobia, MS, evidencing her dedication to faith and fellowship. Her contributions were celebrated publicly when she was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade in Coldwater, Mississippi—a testament to the high regard in which she was held.
Helen’s character was defined by a hardworking nature and a strong work ethic, qualities that inspired those around her. She balanced her many roles with grace, whether as a seamstress, counselor, or loving family member.
She is survived by her children: Skipper Wright and his wife Merrie of Arlington, Tennessee, along with their children Jarod Wright, Audrey Wright, and Caroline Erikson and her husband Logan; Gay Darnell and her husband Jerry of Hernando, Mississippi, and their children Allen Darnell and his wife Katie and their son Cole, Brady Darnell and his fiancée Lauryn, and Carson Darnell; Mark Wright and his wife Rebecca of Twinsburg, Ohio, and their children Cameron, Connor, Kate, and Emily Wright.
