James Arthur Garrett Jr., born on September 19, 1963, in Cleveland, Mississippi, passed away at his home in Horn Lake, Mississippi, on December 3, 2025. He was 62 years old. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who touched the lives of many during his time on earth.
James had a fulfilling career as a tow boat operator and also worked at Economy Boat Store in Memphis, Tennessee. His dedication to his work was evident to all who knew him, and he was respected by colleagues and friends alike.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, James served in Germany at the Berlin Wall, reflecting his commitment to his country. His legacy of service and dedication is cherished by his family and those who followed in his footsteps.
An avid NASCAR fan, James enjoyed the thrill of the races, often attending events at the Talladega Superspeedway. He particularly admired his favorite driver, Kevin Harvick. Beyond racing, he was a proud supporter of the Tennessee Volunteers and Mississippi State Bulldogs. James found joy in hunting and fishing, and his love for the outdoors was matched only by his enthusiasm for motorcycles and jacked-up trucks.
James was a family man who cherished his kids and grandkids. He is remembered fondly by his beloved wife, Mary Garrett; his daughters, Courtney Harvey (Victoria) of Holly Springs; and his sons, Charles Forbes and James Garrett III, both of Horn Lake, Mississippi. His grandchildren, Avery Lee Garner, Emma Grace Garner, and Bennett Forbes brought immense joy to his life.
In addition to his immediate family, James is mourned by his siblings, Richard Washburn and Ginger Asbury, along with many nieces, nephews, and others who considered him as a father figure, including Michael Robbins, Terry Bowen, and Caitlyn Wieland.
James is preceded in death by his father, James Arthur Garrett Sr.; his mother, Essay Mae Evans; his mother, Hazel Garrett; and his son, Grant Garner.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 1:00 PM at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home, located at 2470 Hwy 51 S, Hernando, Mississippi, 38632.
James Arthur Garrett Jr. will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and steadfast love for his family. His spirit and the memories he created will remain alive in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
