James M. “Mac” Payne Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home with his family on August 15, 2026. Born on July 3, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, Mac’s life spanned seventy-eight years, each filled with devotion to his loved ones and a deep passion for the things he cherished most.
A proud graduate of Whitehaven High School’s Class of 1966, Mac went on to serve his country in the Army Reserves, embodying the values of duty and service from a young age. In his professional life, he was a dedicated machinist for the IC RailRoad and found purpose and camaraderie in his work, retiring after years of steadfast commitment.
Mac’s love for anything antique with a motor was well-known among those fortunate enough to call him family or friend. His home was a haven for classic engines, motorcycles, and countless projects in various stages of “fixing.” His expertise and willingness to offer a helping hand made him a treasured resource within his community, and his knowledge and service will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
After his retirement, Mac enjoyed thirteen years filled with family adventures and the open road. Together Mac and Judy traveled far and wide, making memories that will continue to warm the hearts of his family. Whether he was telling stories or offering sage advice over a well-worn tool bench, Mac lived every moment with sincerity and joy.
Mac is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Judy Payne; his son, Jamie Payne and his wife Angela of Hernando, MS; his daughter, Melissa Payne Baker of Atlanta, GA; his treasured grandchildren, Avery Payne Haley and her husband Bowen and Payne Baker; his brothers, Pete Payne and his wife Vicki and Dan Payne and his wife Jenny ; and his sister, Susan Carter and her husband, Allen. Mac was preceded in death by his father, John Payne, and his mother, Mary Payne, both of whom helped lay the foundation for his deeply rooted sense of family and tradition.
To honor Mac’s life and legacy, family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home, 2470 Hwy 51 S, Hernando, Mississippi. A short devotion will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Interment with immediate family will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery, 3422 Fogg Road South, Hernando.
Those who knew James M. "Mac" Payne Sr. will remember a man of integrity, kindness, and boundless resourcefulness—a mentor, a confidant, and above all, a loving patriarch whose presence enriched every life he touched. His memory will live on in the stories told, the engines humming, and the cherished traditions he leaves behind.
