My dad was a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a friend to many. His favorite quote was “I yam what I yam,” and he lived his entire life true to that, sticking to his beliefs and doing what he thought was best. In his last days, he was celebrating his sobriety and working on rebuilding relationships with family and friends.
He was born in Kentucky to Bobby Joe Felts and Betty Davis Felts and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. Michael dedicated his life to his work with the City of Horn Lake, where he served as the Assistant Director of Public Works until his retirement. To me, he will always be remembered as the best mechanic who ever lived. He loved hunting, fishing, vintage TV shows (including The Price is Right), restoring cars, and making miniature model cars.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until a Celebration of Life Memorial Service beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at Brantley-Phillips Funeral Home (2470 Highway 51 South Hernando, Mississippi 38632). In honor of Michael’s love for the outdoors, the family encourages guests to wear camouflage and/or comfortable clothing. After the service, friends are invited with the family for fellowship at Sardis Lake where Michael enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his daughter, Tara Felts Fryer; his stepdaughter, Tasha Cougle; his stepson, Corey Boone; and his bonus son, Jason Anderson. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Hannah Dorr Key, Savannah Felts, and Xander Jeffrey, as well as his great-grandchildren, Haze’Charles Dorr and Mateo Felts-Gonzales. He is also survived by his brothers, Samuel Felts and Timothy Felts. His memory will be cherished by many nieces and nephews, including Christopher Felts, Scott Felts, Eric Felts, David Felts, Corey Felts, Dustin Felts, Nick Felts, Jamie Felts, Lori Felts, and Melanie Felts.
Michael also grew up with Jerome Powell, Steven Powell, and Toya Powell, who became like siblings to him. He and Jerome especially shared a lifelong “brotherhood,” speaking daily and standing by each other through every stage of life. Over the years, Michael grew close to Jerome’s wife, Jerlene, and their children, Edward, Jason, and Jerome Jr., as well as their grandchildren, Jerome III and Juelz. They were not just friends but family, and they will always hold a special place in his story.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Joe and Betty Davis Felts, and his brothers, Richard Felts and Daniel Felts.
