Robert Wayne Holden, 90, affectionately known as Wayne, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi. Born on February 19, 1936, in Thaxton, Mississippi, Wayne lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and a profound love for the outdoors.
Wayne proudly served in the United States Army, dedicating himself to his nation with honor and commitment. His military service was a defining chapter in his life, reflecting his strong character and sense of duty.
A man of many talents and passions, Wayne was well known for his skill in crafting long bows and arrows, a hobby that showcased his patience and craftsmanship. He found great joy in hunting deer and turkey, pursuits that connected him deeply to the natural world he so cherished. His love of the outdoors extended to everyday pleasures, such as cutting grass on his tractor and lawn mower, activities that brought him peace and satisfaction.
Family was the cornerstone of Wayne’s life. He is survived by his daughter, Jan Gibson; sons Chris O’Conner and his wife Tamla, and Mitch O’Conner and his wife Angela; and numerous grandchildren including Kit O’Conner and his wife Sonya, Nathen O’Conner and his wife Jennifer, Amanda Ainsworth and her husband Keith, Lauren Kelso and her husband Matthew, and John Wesley Gibson and his wife Kathleen. Wayne’s warmth and guidance will also be dearly missed by his great-grandchildren: Mckynze, Elliott, Bo, Luke, Madeline, Will, Madison, Bohdi, Sebastian, Anastasia and Gage.
Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alline Rice Holden; his mother, Annie V. O’Conner; his brothers James Holden, Henry Lee Holden, Roy Holden, and Silas Holden; and his sister Shirley Stanford.
Known for his gentle spirit and strength of character, Wayne’s presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. His legacy of love, humility, and dedication to family and country will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by the funeral service from 10:00 a.m., both at Brantley Phillips Funeral Home, located at 2470 Hwy 51 S, Hernando, Mississippi 38632. Interment will follow at Longtown Cemetery located at 5398 Sees Chapel Road in Longtown, MS
